1. The Foundation (1842)

Sibford School was established in 1842 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Its primary mission was unique for the time: providing an education for children whose parents had been "disowned" by the Society for marrying non-Quakers, or for families of modest means.

  • The Original Site: Started in a small manor house with just 26 pupils.
  • The Philosophy: Education was practical; students split their time between classroom study and manual labor like gardening and housework.

Location: Sibford Ferris, Oxfordshire, England

Motto: Truth and Honour

2. Growth and Relocation

By the late 19th century, the school's success necessitated a larger campus. The school transitioned to its current location, characterized by beautiful local ironstone architecture that mirrors the Cotswold style of the surrounding village.

3. The 20th Century: Modernization

Period Development
1920s - 30s Shifted toward a progressive curriculum, prioritizing arts, music, and drama.
World War II The school acted as a safe haven for evacuees while maintaining its pacifist Quaker ethos.
1950s - 60s A period of expansion, adding science laboratories and modern sporting facilities.

4. Sibford Today

Now a co-educational day and boarding school for ages 3 to 18, Sibford continues to honor its Quaker heritage through several distinct practices:

Equality

Students and teachers often address each other by their first names to break down traditional hierarchies.

Silence

The "Morning Meeting" includes periods of quiet reflection, a cornerstone of Quaker worship.

Sustainability

A strong focus on environmental stewardship and global responsibility.

"The school’s motto, 'Truth and Honour', remains the guiding star for all students, past and present."
